Debbie qualified from Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 1990 and has specialised in the treatment of shoulder problems since 1997.
She works as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in the Consultant Orthopaedic NHS Shoulder Clinic at Southampton assessing a wide range of shoulder conditions, including sports injuries, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff related tendon problems, as well as patients who are recovering from shoulder surgical procedures including Rotator Cuff Repairs, Labral Stabilisation surgery and Total or Reverse Glenohumeral Joint Replacements. Debbie was amongst the first Allied Health Professionals in 2000 to be awarded the British Elbow and Shoulder Society fellowship, which facilitated her interest in shoulder therapy by visiting other shoulder professionals in the UK and Europe. Debbie currently performs regular audit and evaluation of shoulder patients in Southampton, and the results of a study on surgical repair to ACJ instability were presented at the British Shoulder and Elbow Society conference in 2017. The results of two other studies involving a new technique to help repair rotator cuff injuries and repair sternoclavicular joint dislocation were also presented at Wessex Gauvain 2024. She is currently auditing a pioneering shoulder pain relieving technique, addressing the suprascapular nerve in the shoulder, and the early results were presented at an Interventional Radiology Conference in 2024.
Debbie has a very close working relationship with Mr Andrew Cole, Mr Campbell Hand and Mr George Cox, working alongside them in a weekly shoulder clinic, and meeting once a month to discuss complex cases alongside an expert radiologist. She has also been part of a working party which includes other shoulder specialists across the UK, designing and evaluating an instability scoring system for complex atraumatic shoulder instability. She also attends and is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society discussing complex shoulder cases with other shoulder specialists in the UK.
Debbie has a large educational role as part of her clinical specialist job and regularly teaches other health professionals about shoulder rehabilitation, updates the current surgical protocols in Southampton and advises on the management of shoulder patients playing professional sport in the Hampshire region. She has previously worked with elite rugby teams and competitive sailing crews as a physiotherapist. She also enjoys sailing, skiing, cycling and running.
